Victoria
Rumble is a contributing editor for the
Citizen's Companion and a monthly columnist
for the Civil War Courier. Her articles deal
with a wide array of topics about the
material culture of the 18th and 19th century. Past
articles have included etiquette, religion,
quilting, knitting, clothing of the 19th
century, foods commonly eaten during the
19th century, hair styles, rug hooking, letter writing, games and
children's activities, parlor theatricals,
tableaux vivants, mourning customs, herbal
medicine, culinary herbs and their use,
ersatz items used in a blockaded South
during the U.S. Civil War, and much more.
She has also had articles published in
various newspapers, antiques journals,
genealogical journals, magazines,
etc. Several of her articles have been used
as hand-outs by teachers at the elementary
level through higher education, by
herbalists as well as Sunday School
associations, etc.
She has written two cookbooks, a family
history, and her latest is Victoria's Home
Companion, or the Whole Art of Cooking. This
book is a serious study of American cuisine
through the end of the 19th century. It
contains recipes, and tips for preparing a
delicious and memorable meal for a holiday
feast or theme party dinner, and the serious
foodways historian will find a plethora of
ideas and instructions.

"ground-breaking" by reviewers in that it
brings to light a facet of life not
previously acknowledged - recreation among
the hard working farm folk and the wealthy
elite alike.

on topics ranging from 19th century religion
and Sunday School to meals commonly prepared
throughout the century.
She serves as point of contact for the
Homespun Living History Guild, and is a
member of the Alamance Chapter, Daughters of
the American Revolution, The International
Association of Culinary Professionals, the
Southern Foodways Alliance, Clan McDougal
Society of N. America, the Appalachian
Writer's Assoc., and the Southeastern
Coalition of Authentic Reenactors. She
publishes under the name of Thistle Dew
Books TM.
She has been married for 30 years, has two
sons, and two lovely daughters-in-law. |
